Ngilu: Why I did not support Kibaki in 2007

By Mary Kamande and Daniel Nzia
Presidential aspirant Charity Ngilu has explained why she did not support President Kibaki’s candidacy in 2007.
In a meeting with opinion leaders from Thika and Kandara in Thika, Ngilu said she was disappointed to see that interests of the poor were not at the heart of the Government. She said prior to 2007, she had observed the suffering of the poor but her efforts to put in place policies that would uplift their welfare were scuttled by businessmen, who prevented the President from assenting to policies.
She said after encountering a child whose mother could not pay for her medical fees, she had come up with a free medical care policy, which was rejected.
“I do not talk for the rich. My voice and energy will be to support the poor,” she said, adding that if elected president, she would see to it that Kenya creates wealth.
She added there was need to build a light rail that would help people from Kibera slums access their work stations in Industrial Area cheaply, instead of constructing another road atop Uhuru Highway.
The Narc party leader expressed confidence that she will win the race. Mutito MP Kiema Kilonzo accompanied Ngilu.
Meanwhile, the Narc presidential hopeful will on Sunday meet aspirants seeking party ticket in various posts in Machakos town.
Good health care
The Water and Irrigation minister is expected to share her ‘Basic Needs Revolution’ manifesto with the aspirants.
Ngilu launched her presidential bid in Nairobi last week. She dismissed assertions that she was spoiling chances for Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka in Ukambani.
While launching her bid, Ngilu pledged to fight poverty, ensure good health care, water provision, empower women and youth, and create wealth.
Ngilu added if elected, her Government would ensure Kenyans enjoy the benefits of their sweat. She said imports of good that can be produced locally would be abolished.
“We are importing farm produce from other countries yet we produce the same,” she said.
