Kenya bags six medals at the paralympics

Kenya has won a total of six medals; two gold, two silver and two bronze in the London Paralympic games whose curtains come down Sunday night in England. 

The country's hopes of winning a medal on the final day were dashed after seasoned Paralympian Henry Wanyoike failed to finish the men's marathon won by Spaniard Alberto Suarez in a new world record of 2 hours 24 minutes 50 seconds.

Alonso Serna of Colombia was 2nd and Abderrahim Zhiou of Tunisia 3rd. Abraham Tarbei bagged  Kenya's last medal of the games last night, a bronze in the 800m T46 category won by Gunther Matzinger of Austria in a new world record of one minute 51.82 seconds.

Samir Nouioua of Algeria won silver. Other Kenyans in the race Jonah Chesum and Stanley Cheruiyot finished 6th and 7^th respectively. 

Meanwhile, another seasoned Kenyan Paralympian Mary Nakhumicha who participated in Javelin, Shot Put and Discuss events at the games is expected to be bestowed the prestigious Whang Youn Dai Achievement award at the closing ceremony.

Nakhumicha who did not win any medals this year will be feted for achieving sporting excellence. She holds the world record in the Javelin F57 category.

Kenya was represented by 13 athletes, 11 men and two ladies at the London Paralympics.
