Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta takes his campaigns to Meru starting this weekend hoping to ease tensions among MPs supporting him.
For the last two days, MPs who belong to Mr Kenyatta’s The National Alliance have engaged Energy Minister Kiraitu Murungi in a war of words over his remarks that Mr Kenyatta must involve his Alliance Party of Kenya in his campaigns in Meru.
Mr Kenyatta will be in Igembe and Meru on Friday and Saturday and in Tharaka, Nithi and Embu the following weekend. The MPs have accused Mr Kiraitu Murungi of attempting to balkanise the region.
But Mr Murungi on Wednesday, said that his party was open to working with like-minded parties such as TNA.
Nithi MP Kareke Mbiuki, Tharaka’s Alex Mburi, Mithuki Linturi of Igembe South, Cecily Mbarire of Runyenjes and Tigania West’s Kilemi Mwiria declared that TNA was unstoppable in the region.
“Every presidential candidates is free to visit Meru whenever they want and regardless of which party they belong too,” Mr Mwiria said.
Mr Mbiuki is a vocal supporter of Mr Kenyatta and a strong critic of Mr Murungi. He said that Mr Murungi’s APK was a “village bus” without a national agenda.
Ms Mbarire supported Mr Mbiuki insisting that Mr Kenyatta’s supporters would all operate under the TNA banner.

Tigania East MP Peter Munya came to Mr Murungi’s defence saying that the Minister only wanted Mr Kenyatta to involve other parties including APK in his plans.
Mr Murungi has been instrumental in Mr Kenyatta’s political activities in Mt Kenya region which is grappling with President Kibaki’s succession.
Last year he was instrumental in organising the signing of a protocol between the DPM, Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka and the late Internal Security Minister George Saitoti where they pledged to support one of them for president.
