NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 20 –Special Programmes Minister Esther Murugi says the government has identified potential land for the resettlement of the remaining 1,500 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
She said on Wednesday that her ministry was working out modalities of engaging the land owners with a view to purchasing land for the resettlement programme.
“Currently we have about one thousand five hundred households left. The technical team was out in the last two weeks and brought in substantial land for the resettlement of the IDPs. We will negotiate with the land owners for the purchase through the Ministry of Lands,” she said.
Murugi spoke while receiving 30 lorries and 10 water trucks from the Japanese government for relief food distribution, and she assured the remaining one thousand five hundred households left will be resettled soon.
The trucks are meant for delivering relief assistance to needy areas but the ministry will also use them in transporting the IDPs to their respective new homes.
“We normally incur a bill of almost Sh2 million every time we are relocating the IDPs. We will not only use the lorries for distribution of relief food but also to relocate the IDPs,” she confirmed.
The acting Japanese Ambassador Yoichiro Yamada said. “The 30 lorries and 10 water trucks will be used by the ministry for relief assistance which will help the government in disaster management.”
He assured that the Japanese will help continue supporting Kenya as other disaster management equipments will be delivered in due course.
“The Government of Japan will continue to support the Kenyan people and especially those who live in the remote areas, in their efforts to secure food and water,” he added.
