Post of Chief Justice to be advertided as Gicheru retires

THE posts of Chief Justice and deputy Chief Justice will be advertised this week. Chief Justice Evan Gicheru retired on Sunday. The advert which is being prepared by a JSC sub-committee of three which will spearhead the recruitment exercise. It will also be placed in the Kenya Gazette edition of Friday this week and the dailies.

The commission is required by law to publicise the vacancy, post a notice on its website and send the notice to the Law Society of Kenya. “It’s long overdue and the JSC is not about to wait for last minute rush,” the source said.

The expected advert will describe the vacancy, state all constitutional and statutory requirements and invite all qualified persons to apply. The deadline for applications inform all interested persons to how to obtain applications shall not be more than 21 days.

Interested candidates will provide information on their previous employment, legal practice, financial discipline, community service, pro bono activity, criminal record and other non-legal interests they may be involved in.

Rigorous vetting will then follow. In the first 14 days, the commission will review the applications for completeness and conformity with the necessary requirements.

After that and in the 21 days, the commission will verify and supplement information received by the applicant by communicating to all of their (applicants) references and former employers who shall be asked to comment on the applicant.
