A group of leaders has accused the National Cohesion and Integration Commission of bias in its operations.
The MPs demanded that the commission punish Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta for propagating hate speech. (Read: Uhuru, Ruto say they are 'action oriented')
There should be no sacred cows in the dispensation of justice, they said, and asked the Mzalendo Kibunjia-led commission to compel Mr Odinga and Mr Kenyatta to record statements over their recent war of words.
Information and Communication minister Samuel Poghisio, assistant ministers Asman Kamama and Josephat Nanok and MPs Ekwee Ethuro and Wilson Litole challenged the commission to establish standards applicable to every Kenyan regardless of their position.
They said there was inconsistency in the commission’s work and called for common laws that would ensure those fanning hatred face the full force of the law.
“All Kenyans are equal and nobody is above the law. The law should be applied without discrimination,” said Mr Poghisio.
The MPs were addressing the Press at Kitale Museum during a three-day workshop organised by the Ministry of Northern Kenya and other Arid Lands to prepare leadership for the Turkana, Pokot and Baringo counties.
The leaders challenged professionals from pastoral communities to spearhead cultural change among herders to discard retrogressive practices.
They said professionals had the responsibility to educate their communities on development issues.
