Kenya National Union of Teachers wants the government to release Sh15 billion owed to retired teachers by the end of July. The national acting deputy secretary general Xavier Nyamu said the government has been reluctant to pay teachers who have retired since 1997 even after a court ruled they should get the money in form of salary and pension increment.

Speaking at Murang’a Technology Primary School during the Knut branch elections, Nyamu said the money was to be factored in the main budget and called upon the Ministers for Education and Finance to look into the issue.

He said the teachers have waited for too long and their patience is running out. “If the government does not have enough money it should sell some assets. All we need is our money,” said Nyamu.

He also said the government must honour its promise of the 20 per cent salary increment which it had pledged to pay by February. He said the economy of the country has stabilised and the government is in a position to make these payments.

Nyamu lamented the lack of annual leave allowances for the teachers saying that this forces some teachers to remain in school to earn extra money. “Every employee is given an allowance for the annual leave but it appears that teachers have been left out in this,” he said.

Nyamu urged the government to bring on board all teachers employed on contract saying there is an acute shortage of teachers in the country which has adversely affected education standards.

He said that Knut has written a letter to the Teachers Service Commission giving an ultimatum of three months for the teachers to be employed permanently. This would end the discrimination between the interns and the fully employed teachers, he said. “You cannot employ qualified teachers and call them interns. what would you be testing?" he posed.
