The Cutting Edge

By THE WATCHMANPosted Thursday, March 3 2011 at 19:22
RAILA WRONG ON HAWKERS. Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s directive at a political rally in Nairobi is wrong, as it implied that hawkers should be left to operate as they wish in the city centre, says Dr S.N. Oresi. According to Oresi, Raila does not seem to appreciate the inconvenience suffered by city residents as the hawkers flout every rule. After all, he is either always in a motorcade or flying by chopper. “Most of these petty traders will display their wares on pavements; some of them are thieves and con men.”

WE ARE SUFFERING. For nearly two months, residents of Ngummo estate in Nairobi have not been supplied with water, moans Tamara King. As a result, looking for water for domestic use has become a daunting task and all that the city firm says is that it has something to do with low-pressure. “All we want is water. After all, the monthly bills are still being sent promptly,” she adds. They are supposed to be supplied on Thursdays, but this has not been the case. Her contact is Tel. 0732600519 or Tamara.king31@gmail.com.

POWER RATIONING? For two weeks, the people of Chematich/Siyoi on the Maili Saba-Sibaga road in Trans Nzoia East District have been subjected to punishing power rationing, without any prior notice, says Boniface Machuka. Almost daily, from 3pm, he reports, there are blackouts lasting for up to 12 hours. Prior to that, they had to endure low voltage power for another two weeks. Boniface would like to know from the KPLC what is going on. His contact is Tel 0722477919.

TAME THE HOODLUMS. Soccer hooliganism is with us again, remarks Ng’ang’a Mutamba, disgusted at the sight of Gor Mahia fans hurling boulders simply because their team had been whipped 3-0 by Posta Rangers in a Premier League match. “It’s terrible, as the perpetrators were sane looking adults. Is losing a match enough to provoke such violence? They know that in a game, there are three possible results – victory, defeat or a draw. Police must arrest and charge all those caught on camera,” Ng’ang’a demands.

quit the dirty habit. Herman Kahoi is disgusted with women who can’t properly dispose of such intimate things as used sanitary pads. Nanyuki, where he lives, is littered with thousands of dirty pads strewn all over the place in residential areas. He poses: “Can’t our otherwise smart women learn from cats how to be discreet with such items so that no other person sees them? If you do not have a dustbin, how about digging a hole and burying the thing? The pads have become an eyesore!”

GONE TO THE DOGS. The 2010 KCSE exam results have been rather depressing for Lydia Mimano because some schools that have always excelled performed dismally. But even more disappointing for her is the failure of Tumu Tumu Girls School in Nyeri, which has been earmarked for elevation to a national school, to appear among the top 100 provincial schools. There is an urgent need to review the list of the schools picked for upgrading. Some, she adds, should even be demoted to district schools.
Have an excellent day, won’t you!
