Tears streaming down her cheeks, Lupita dares Kisumu village girls to dream big

Hundreds of schoolgirls were delighted to meet actress Lupita Nyong'o at her homecoming in Kisumu on Wednesday where she spoke passionately about their education.

She was moved to tears as the listened to a recital on insecurity, seated with her father and Kisumu Senator Anyang Nyong’o, mother Dorothy Nyong’o and grandmother Dorcas Nyong’o.
Decrying the worrying rate at which girls are dropping out of school, the Oscar-winning actress asked education players to intervene.
Lupita urged relevant authorities to prioritise girls' education saying it has been neglected for years, yet it will improve their well-being.
Noting that the neglect has led to their poor performance countrywide, she asked parents and the education sector to work together.

She asked students to focus on their dreams and not let their circumstances determine their future.
“You may be facing numerous challenges at home- your parents may be poor, you could be living with unsupportive relatives or you may feel alone in this world. Do not let this define you or your future,” she told them.
"You were created to achieve more and to be the best the world can have."
Lupita asked the government to improve infrastructure and ensure learning environments are friendly.
Noting that children have a right to education, she asked teachers to ensure quality to enable them meet market demands.
Lupita further asked the government to take stern action against men who impregnate school girls.
She advised parents to support their children's dreams saying they have a right to choose from any field.
She warned them against interfering with their studies by assigning them too many chores, and asked the students to be disciplined.
Lupita was accompanied by her managers and sponsors to the mentorship session organised by Safaricom Foundation.
“This mentorship programme aims to build ambition, spur self-confidence and challenge the girls here to discover and fulfill their potential," said Safaricom Foundation chairman Joseph Ogutu.
Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma and Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga praised Lupita for her acting which has earned Kenya fame.
