Monday October 29,2012-The International Commission of Jurist(ICJ) has said President Mwai Kibaki is shielding Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto from International Criminal Court(ICC) trials scheduled for April next year.
Addressing a gathering of civil society members and diplomats last week, ICJ Executive Director George Kegoro said the sustained bid by Uhuru and Ruto to clinch the presidency in the March 4th elections is a well calculated move by President Mwai Kibaki to frustrate the ICC.
“The political endeavors of Kenyatta and Ruto, with the apparent support of Kibaki, are designed to shield the two from trial and to undermine Kenya’s capacity to co-operate with ICC,” Kegoro said.
He said Raila’s position as a presidential candidate in the forthcoming elections has “reduced his appetite” for the kind of political risks attributed to him like outright support from the ICC.
Kegoro further stated that Uhuru and Ruto are linking their cases to the election as deliberate effort to increase their support. They will then after the election seeking a political deal detailing “some kind of protection from the ICC,”
He further stated that the two leaders have decided to “ride their luck” as far as ICC cases are concerned.
