Tusker FC start their Kenyan Premier League title defence against relegation survivors City Stars on February 11 at Nyayo National Stadium, according to the official league fixtures released on Saturday.
Big spenders AFC Leopards will put their newly acquired players in action the same day against Chemelil Sugar, with striker Victor Ochieng’ being lined up against his old club.
The fixtures have been harmonised to ensure they do not clash with Harambee Stars matches, said Kenya Premier League Limited’s (KPL) chief executive officer, Jack Oguda.
The league starts earlier than usual so that the national team can have ample time to prepare for the East and Central Africa (Cecafa) Senior Challenge Cup in Kenya this year.
‘’We worked closely with the Stars coach, Francis Kimanzi, to ensure the Stars programme is well taken care of. We do not want to clash with the Stars schedule,” said Oguda.
Gor Mahia travel to Thika on February 12 for a date with Thika United.
Newcomers handed tricky games
Newcomers Muhoroni Youth and Oserian have been given tricky games on the first weekend, Muhoroni taking on Western Stima while former champions Oserian travel to play Rangers in Nairobi, both on February 12.
It however remains unclear where Muhoroni will be hosting their matches as their home ground does not meet KPL standards.
The league kick-off will be preceded by the DStv Cup game between reigning KPL champions Tusker and Cup champions Gor Mahia.
A week later, Gor and Tusker will be involved in continental assignments – Tusker hosting Rwanda’s APR in the first round of the African Champions League while Gor Mahia will be playing Ferroviaro de Maputo in the Caf Confederations Cup in Mozambique.
