TENSION was high in Malindi after supporters of area MP Gideon Mungaro clashed with those of a Langata politician Stanley Livondo.
The two groups differed at a fund raising in Watamu-Kilifi County after Livondo’s supporters started criticizing Mungaro.
But still they went ahead and raised Sh 1.2 million for the Voice of Watamu women group.
Livondo’s supporters were criticing Mungaro for having failed to fulfill promises made during the last general elections.
Mr. Livondo was accompanied by the former Malindi Mayor Mr. Fredrick Kazungu Diwani, Professor Chenje Mwachiro of Pwani University, Kilifi Mayor Ms. Esther Kache among others.
The activist said that the current constitution allowed criticizing public officers if they failed to deliver to their people.
“There is freedom of speech and so you cannot stop politicians. This is the only chances let them say what they want as far as they are not doing it against the law,” said Livondo.
Some civic leaders and youths allied to Mung’aro led by nominated councilors Ms. Barka Ali Mohamed were shouting saying that the meeting was only meant for fund raising but no politics at all vowing to stop the ceremony.
At a time she grabbed the microphone from the master of ceremony shouting” This is not a political rally we are here to help the women group not politics.”
The Livondo aids had a tough time to stop the civic leaders and the youths to stop the drama since they resisted moving out of the ceremony.
“We cannot go away we are here to raise fund for the women group but not politics. Stop politics!” they noted with concern.
However Mr. Livondo urged leader to cooperate and elect visionary leaders during the general election in the county governments.
He said Dictator Leadership is outdated in Kenya where everyone has rights of expression and opinions regardless to tribe and political stands.
“I warn you people who want to stop meeting that I am the guest. You are very young in that types of politics we know better how to do it. If Mung’aro had paid you so that you can interrupt the fund raising you are not lucky,” said Livondo.
He said youths should reject being used by political leaders to cause chaos since they will at the end face the law like the Ocampo six.
Mr. Livondo said that some of the Ocampo six suspects are being accused for defending their own party in the 200-2008 elections and warned youths against repeating the same in the coming general election.
“We want leaders who have visionary plans for the community not who want to benefit from the positions. If you fight when a leader is criticized for failing to deliver you are also supporting impunity and corruption in Kenya,”Livondo said.
Speaking at the same meeting the Kilifi Mayor Ms. Esther Kache urged women to come out and garner their respective positions in the coming county governments.
She said the time for women to be left at home for household jobs will be a past tense if they show great concern.
Ms. Kache also added that women should not wait to be given reserved seats but must come out and fight for them.
“Don’t wait you ladies to be given free seats you must sweat for them,” he noted.
