FORMER finance minister David Mwiraria has tabled evidence that he was in hospital on the day he was expected to appear before the TJRC.
CEO Patricia Nyaundi confirmed to the Star that Mwiraria had tabled proof that he was at the Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi on May 17 when the Truth Team was waiting to take his statement on the Wagalla Massacre.
Mwiraria had together with former PS Bethuel Kiplagat, former chief of general staff Joseph Kibwana, former PCs Benson Kaaria and Joseph Kaguthi, ex-service men Maj Philip Chebet and Lt. Muriungi been summoned to appear before the commission at the KICC.
Others were Amb David Mutemi, A.N Njue, D.K Mativo, PN King’ori, John Gituma, James ole Serian and J Mwangovya, all summoned to give their account of the Wagalla Massacre or other human rights violations committed in their days in service. “I can confirm that Hon. Mwiraria has filed with the commission some form of evidence as ordered by the commission,” Nyaundi told the Star.
Mwiraria, just like Kaguthi and most of the others did not show up at KICC but instead sent their lawyer Kioko Kilukumi who pleaded they be given time to get the necessary government records to enable them testify from a point of information.
Nyaundi however persisted in wanting to know why they did not show up in the first place as they had been summoned in their own individual capacity.
The commission last sat in Nairobi on May 18 when former PS Zakayo John Kamenchu, Northern Kenya and Arid Lands minister Ibrahim Elmi and broadcaster Fred Machoka testified. Before them, former DC Manasseh Tiema and former minister GG Kariuki had testified.
When the ex -ivil servants appear starting this Thursday, they will be paid Sh3,000 accommodation fee for the days they will be helping the commission as well as get transport reimbursement if they undertook travels.
