Balala and Mondhar

The Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) would reconcile Mombasa Mayor Ahmed Mondhar and Tourism minister Najib Balala whose working relationship has been icy in the recent past.

CIPK Secretary General Sheikh Mohamed Dor says the tense relationship between the two leading politicians in Mombasa had led to divisive politics and retarded development in the area.

Speaking at Mbaruq mosque in Mombasa on Sunday Sheikh Dor who is also ODM nominated MP said Muslim leaders have approached the CIPK to arbitrate between the political rivals in a view to reconciling them for the sake of unity, and development.

The two politicians have been at loggerheads and fighting for the political supremacy at the Coast.

The genesis of their rivalry can be traced to the race for the mayoral post this year where Balala who is the MP for Mvita backed and sponsored his cousin Towfiq Balala in the election which was however won by Mondhar who was backed by Kisauni MP Ali Hassan Joho.

Towfiq Balala who was a nominated ODM councillor two months ago resigned in a huff citing widespread corruption and frustration at the Mombasa Municipal Council.

Last week, the minister decried that land grabbing perpetuated by politicians and tycoons in his constituency were slowing down the smooth implementation of CDF projects in the area.
