Olympic coach commits suicide

Russian volleyball coach commits suicide, with colleagues blaming poor Olympic showing for his death

The aftermath of a poor Olympic showing for Russia may have become even more dire on Wednesday, when the coach of the country's women's volleyball team was found hanged in his hotel room with some blaming the team's poor results at the London Games for his death.

As reported by Eurosport and a handful of other outlets, 43-year-old Russian volleyball coach Sergey Ovchinnikov (also spelled Sergei in some outlets) was found hanged in a hotel room while he and his Dynamo Moscow squad were taking part in preseason training in Croatia. Ovchinnikov had recently finished a turbulent Olympic campaign leading the Russian women's volleyball team. The national team had entered as favorites but was eventually eliminated by Brazil in the quarterfinals, failing to convert a whopping six match points in the loss.
While there is certainly no proof that Ovchinnikov's death was brought on by the national team's poor results, two of his colleagues insisted that it played a part in the suicide.
"He took the Olympics very personally," Russian men's volleyball coach Vladimir Alekno told RT.com. "I saw what he was going through and how upset he was after the defeat. He didn't talk much. Even after victories he was always thinking about something and smoked a lot."
According to Sovetsky Sports news service, Ovchinnikov had also complained of recurring headaches in recent days, a malady which may or may not be connected to the Olympics and the stress it brought.
Regardless of reason, another of Ovchinnikov's former colleagues was distraught at the news of the coach's death, insisting that his suicide was simply the result of an irrational reaction to a single tournament.
"This is so stupid," former Russian women's volleyball coach Vladimir Kuzyutkin told Russian News Service. "He was my friend, my colleague. No one said a bad word about him. Yes, there was a blunder at the Olympics, well, to hell with it."

MPs plot to stop Kibaki sacking Kimunya, CBK boss Ndung'u

Debate on a report that recommends the sacking of Transport minister Amos Kimunya and Central Bank governor Njuguna Ndung’u over the De La Rue money printing deal started on a sour note yesterday with a section of MPs attempting to block it through constant interruptions.
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman and Ikolomani MP Bonny Khalwale was constantly interrupted when he stood to move the motion which, among other things, recommends that President Kibaki appoint a tribunal to probe the suitability of Ndung’u as the CBK boss.
In an elaborate plan to poke holes on the report and save the two officials, several MPs constantly intervened as Khalwale moved the motion. They constantly dismissed Khalwale's explanations to the House. The constant interruptions ate into the time allocated to debate the report.By 6.30 pm when the House adjourned the day's session,Khalwale had barely concluded moving the motion.
However, temporary Speaker Gitobu Imanyara directed that the  debate shall resume on Tuesday when the House convenes for another session. Among the first to take on Khalwale on points of orders were MPs Kiema Kilonzo, Kabando wa Kabando, Shakeel Shabbir, Rachel Shebesh, David Njuguna, Mwangi Kiunjuri, Wilfred Machage and Kimunya himself.
Kimunya complained that Khalwale was misleading the House over the De La Rue Currency and Security Print Ltd contracts. Temporary Speaker Gitobu Imanyara however directed Kimunya to give Khalwale a chance to move the motion and defend himself at the appropriate time.
Pleading for protection from the House Speaker, Khalwale complained that there was a plot to reduce the debate on the report to a “personality contest.” He said the report and its recommendations were not personally directed against Kimunya and Ndung’u and pleaded with MPs to adopt it without any amendment.
Khalwale described Kimunya and Ndung'u as “Siamese twins” who cannot be separated claiming they jointly connived to loot and share public resources. “These are Siamese twins. It means that if you separate them, they will die because Siemens twins sometimes share vital organs. There was connivance between these two senior officers so that the spoils could be shared,” said Khalwale.
Khalwale was however forced to withdraw the statement after Kimunya complained the MP was imputing improper motive on him without substantiation. Despite the interruptions, Khalwale enumerated to the House the key findings of his committee saying they were backed by credible testimony from many government officials including the office of the Auditor General.
He said the report has recommended that Parliament endorse a finding that Kimunya and Ndung’u are not fit to hold public office over their conduct in relation to the money-printing contract between CBK and De La Rue. He said the committee also recommended that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission investigate Kimunya and Ndung'u over their role in the alleged loss of Sh1.8 billion.
He said the investigations should also be carried out with a view of taking appropriate legal action against the two and recovering the lost funds. Khalwale said his committee had found Kimunya and Ndung’u acted contrary to provisions of Chapter 6 of the Constitution of Kenya, the Public Officer Ethics Act and the Public Procurement and Disposal Act.
He said Ndung’u's appointment as CBK governor should be terminated and the President to appoint a tribunal to investigate his conduct. He said Kimunya, who was then Finance minister, had cancelled a 10-year money printing contract with De La Rue that would have been cheaper and instead canvassed for short term contracts.  He also accused Kimunya of misleading the PAC when he appeared before it. “This is corruption, and if corruption is not wrong in Kenya, then there is no other thing that is wrong in Kenya,” said Khalwale.
He claimed that Njuguna failed to resist Kimunya’s pressure. Khalwale said it was through these short term contracts that the country lost the Sh1.8 billion. This is the second time a parliamentary committee is recommending that the President to appoint a tribunal to investigate Njuguna’s conduct. In March this year, at the height of the rapid drop in the value of the Shilling, MPs ganged up and expunged Njuguna’s name from a Parliamentary Select Committee report which probed the depreciation and which recommended the CBK governor's removal.

The M.R.S candidate

The M.R.S candidate

(BY OYUNGA PALA) There are many ways to coexist with men but I suppose marriage is really the only sanctioned way to get men to commit. As we know it, in this millennium where women have choices, marriages mostly serves as a security blanket and there will be women lining up for that posting.
I call them MRS candidates, women whose sole purpose in life is to get to married. They burst on to the scene at puberty and plot eternally for that MRS status. Think Elizabeth Taylor without the finesse.  You will start to recognize MRS candidates around high school. This is the girl who called you her high school sweetheart.
Note; marriage is very important for men. A large fraction of the blokes I know would not have survived 30s on their own. It is at this age when metamorphosis sets in and one’s lifestyle becomes a health hazard. Protrusions surface everywhere, faces fondly chubby, arms oddly feminine. Suddenly the future matters for a change. It is at about this point that a woman who can manage your house and life becomes a major investment.
Let’s face it, most grown men can’t take care of themselves and they certainly wouldn’t know what to do with children. It appears so straightforward so why aren’t men dropping to their knees to propose to women more? Why do some societies invest so much in showcasing their nubiles?
For men, focus kicks in right at the time when women start to wilt. Women believe they have an expiry date and lament the loss of their youth thereafter. Thirty is the much-dreaded deadline. For the averaged switched on male in the 30s, you just want someone to work with you through thick and thin and manage your relatives. Yet all that you get is MRS candidates who are accustomed to make an impression with their baking skills. When times are tight, you want a woman who can make the daily greens and starch fare interesting.
In these days of partnerships, one can find a bachelor with a clean past who can cook and maintains an uncluttered bathroom. That’s what twisted gender politics has produced.
Not many women can survive the trenches for more than five years after university. MRS candidates will only know the comfort of another’s apartment. MRS candidates sometimes forget the importance of differentiating boyfriend from husband material. Sneering at his relatives will only ruin your audition with his family. Essentially, it boils down to the difference between a love affair and a marriage. A lover may offer a comfort blanket during chilly weather but a husband is what you need when the bills start creeping out of the woodwork.
marriage is very important for men. A large fraction of the blokes I know would not have survived 30s on their own. It is at this age when metamorphosis sets in and one’s lifestyle becomes a health hazard.
When you want a man to walk you down the aisle, he has to be coaxed but preferably dragged down it, which is what separates the MRS candidate from the rest.
Have you often wondered why many men have that surprised look on their wedding pictures? It’s a man’s way of saying, “How did this happen?” One night you are dating and the next moment you are starring in your own wedding. That is the speed with which MRS degree aspirants’ work. Losers will transform upon a MRS encounter. You are now a life-time project. Courtship is merely the MRS woman’s way of preparing a man for marriage. The reasoning is if you are going to take on someone’s name, you might as well teach them how to behave around you. Therefore if you are in a relationship and you think it’s moving a little bit too fast or it’s getting too serious chances are you have an MRS candidate in your space.
How do you spot one? What is the difference between sweet girls lost in the fairy tale and an MRS candidate? It is really only a matter of opening your eyes and noting key words and phrases. “Wait! Wait! Not today, I am afraid? Should I stay on the pill? Your mum is really cool”. Meanwhile all mum did was prepare tea. You wonder why these women are never interested in knowing your HIV status!
MRS candidates will pursue one other thing in earnest; themed weddings. The strategy is usually to wear you down. If you can afford it, let her have it because either way you are stuck. If it was a good wedding it serves as a good reminder when the figure starts to fade. If it was a lousy wedding, she will never let you forget. If you skip the ceremony all together you may be given a chance to make amends on your fifth anniversary after the two kids at the same scale.
How do you tell your girl is auditioning for an MRS position? First she always behaves like a wife or how she imagines a wife would behave which can be summarized as needy. She will be very inclined towards cohabitation. Expect her to run the kitchen, change your diet and soon it will be impossible to imagine life without a regular home fried meal. All MRS candidates think frying is cooking. MRS candidates take particular offense following advances by men considered in the low-income bracket?
“Can you imagine the watchman tried to tune me?” The said watchman will talk about being given very confusing vibes.
MRS candidates consider height a major requirement mostly because family pictures look better with a taller husband in them. An MRS candidate will waste no time in changing the way your house looks, whining for expensive clutter. No MRS candidate in her right mind would let go of a man before a return on her investment. You never go back to being single without the house.
Sadly, the future happy wives will be those who step into marriage with a little more deliberation and thought. The smiling wives are usually those who paid a little more attention to the quality of your potatoes when times were down. Only then can you be the pampered wife, sitting serenely besides the successful man. Marriage is a full time management position, with compulsory cloning duty thrown in. The rest is just details.

Our mother was a God fearing woman whose commitment to spirituality, education, health, and community service underscores the significance of Black women in the struggle for social justice.  Her active involvement with the NAACP, the NCNW, and the NAUW are a testament to her lived experience during the women’s rights and civil rights movements in the USA.  She leaves us with a legacy filled with a history of humanitarianism and empowerment of minority communities.

Kenyan journalist extorting money from MPs for publicity
Friday, August 31, 2012 - Citizen TV’s well protected name is on the docks as its cameraman is alleged to be masquerading as a journalist from other stations and soliciting money from Members of Parliament and political aspirants in Rift valley region and Western region, to host them on Citizen TV’s breakfast show.

Dismas Nasibwa, a former employee of NTV is alleged to have been fired from the station over the same allegations of extorting money from VIP’s to host them in some of the most watched shows.

The victims of his extortionist are now up in arms and baying for his blood as he has been asking for bribes ranging from Sh.20, 000 to Sh. 100,000 depending on one’s status.

Apparently Nasibwa who is based at Nyamira never misses public events where he meets his easy targets. He is said to be hiring other journalists who pose to be employees from other stations like KTN, NTV and KISSTV.
