The race for Siaya County senator is heating up with close associates of the two chief competitors, Lands Minister James Orengo and Finance Assistant Minister Oburu Oginga waging a war of words.
Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo on Saturday took Mr Orengo to task and told him to his face to show his development track record.
Title deeds
Mr Gumbo, who supports Dr Oginga for the job, also challenged Mr Orengo to issue title deeds to residents of Siaya.
“Let us be guided by the truth and avoid side shows and lies,” he said amid cheers from mourners who attended the burial of former Rarieda MP Odeny Ngure in Rarieda District.
He accused Mr Orengo of issuing title deeds to people from other parts of the country and ignoring those who elected him to Parliament.
“Give title deeds to these people, they are also Kenyans. Don’t they deserve title deeds as well?” he posed.
Mr Gumbo, who made these remarks when welcoming speakers at the burial, spoke after Mr Orengo thereby not giving him a chance to respond.
Dr Oginga also asked the Ugenya MP to step down for him because he was the first to declare his interest in the seat. However, Mr Orengo and Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo later held a rally at Luanda Kotieno and hit back at Mr Oburu’s camp.
Mr Midiwo said that he has information that the Bondo MP is planning to get nomination certificates straight from Orange House, the ODM headquarters in Nairobi, to avoid the party’s primaries.
“I am the ODM chief whip and I assure you no one will be given the certificate that easily,” he said.
The chief whip also said that Dr Oginga is only seeking the post as a “retirement plan.”
