Monday, the 22nd of October 2012 -Attorney General Githu Muigai has reacted sharply to claims by Isaack Hassan, the Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), that his office is holding back the acquisition of the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) from a French company.
The IEBC chairman had on Sunday blamed the AG’s office for impeding the process of acquiring the BVR’s kits.
Early this morning though the AG issued a quick retort;
“The financing agreement was this (Monday) morning at 8:30am submitted by the Treasury to this Office for the advice of the Attorney-General. The relevant technical team in this Office is now working to render that advice in the shortest time possible.”
The AG also blamed the IEBC for taking the matter to the press instead of telling him through the appropriate internal channels;
“It is deeply regrettable that the IEBC has decided to conduct government business in the media, yet a simple telephone call is all that it would have taken to clear this matter up,” he said in the statement.
The IEBC needs the initial 15,000 kits supplied by French company Safran Morpho to undertake voter registration. The process was to start on the 1st of November but is now bound to be delayed.
