Thursday August 30, 2012 - Prime Minister Raila Odinga has said the government will assist in re-building churches burnt during the Mombasa riots.
Addressing journalists at his office on Wednesday, the PM condemned the destruction of property, saying the violence was not a religious war.
“These are few individuals who are out to cause tension, but religious leaders have accepted to work together to promote peace,” Raila said.
“As a government, we will contribute in re building affected churches so that they can continue with the work of spreading the gospel,”Raila added.
Raila said those causing chaos and religious hatred will face dire consequences.
“We are not going to allow outside forces to incite Kenyans to create religious war. The government will stand firm on outside forces,” Raila fumed.
Five churches were burnt in Mombasa after the killing of radical Islamic cleric Sheikh Aboud Rogo on Monday.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that leaflets have been circulating in Mombasa Mosques claiming that the PM is behind the assassination of Al Qaeda suspect Aboud Rogo.
The leaflets further say that Raila went to Israel to organise and coordinate the elimination of suspected Terrorists.
