After the MINISKIRT, now here comes Mutula AGAIN

Thursday August 16, 2012 - Education Minister, Mutula Kilonzo is currently swimming on murky waters, after he was criticised for banning holiday tuition.

Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) have told Mutula that he may not succeed in implementing the ban.

“When you ban tuition in schools, it will resurface in private centres and in homes and it will be purely commercial,” Knut chairman Wilson Sossion said.

The organisations said candidates must be allowed to revise areas that were not well covered in the syllabus.

“The minister knows that the current system lays a lot of emphasis on examinations. Parents agree that their children be coached ahead of national examinations because they know the consequences of failing. The minister will not help them when they fail,” they said.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Mutula said he cared less if tuition is conducted “under trees or away from schools”

“The TSC code of conduct and ethics says a public officer shall not charge or accept any fee for tuition of a student, even if the tuition is given outside official working hours,” Mutula said  he would disband any school boards that will condone the practice.

The Minister said tuition is a violation of children’s constitutional right as provided for under the Bill of Rights.
