MP may quit ODM for lack of security support

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2012 - 00:00 -- BY HENRY WANYAMA
INTERNAL Security assistant minister Simeon Lesirma has threatened to quit ODM over the "insensitivity of the party in the fight against banditry".
The Samburu West MP yesterday said he is disturbed by ODM's silence in the wake of cattle rustling in Samburu.Last week, more than 200 heavily armed cattle rustlers invaded and attacked Waso Ronkai village and made away with more than 200 head of cattle.
Waso Rongai is 24km from Baragoi town, where bandits killed 42 police officers in November. The latest attack left four people dead and 15 others injured.
“Military involvement is the only way to effectively deal with the ongoing cattle rustling in Samburu," Lesirma said. The MP described the 700 police officers deployed in Samburu as "laughable".
“Jakoyo Midiwo, the ODM Chief Whip opposed the use of the military force. This means the party will not support military deployment in Samburu,” Lesirma said.
He threatened to dump ODM if the party does not support military deployment. Lesirma said he will decamp to a party that is sympathetic to his people who are suffering from a barrage of attacks.
