Cracks have emerged in Safina after one of its MPs questioned the nomination of lawyer Paul Muite as the party presidential flagbearer.
Sports assistant minister Kabando wa Kabando claimed that Mr Muite was imposed on the party by a group of “unknown” delegates behind the backs of elected MPs.
“In 2011, unknown delegates purported to declare a presidential candidate, without even consulting any of the five elected Members of Parliament,” Mr Kabando said in a statement. He was referring to Mr Muite’s nomination as the party’s presidential candidate.
The Mukurweini MP accused the party of engaging in a malicious campaign to undermine elected leaders, citing the move to expel Mathira legislator Ephraim Maina on grounds that he had openly supported Finance Minister Uhuru Kenyatta's Kanu contrary to the Political Parties Act.
The Act forbids a member of a party from publicly associating with another party other that the one that sponsored them to Parliament.
"In a hugely irrational move, Safina has shown disdain for legitimate leadership. In 2009, the party maliciously revoked the nomination of a Mukurweini councillor and replaced her with an unknown man,” he stated.
“The "party" closed the year with the most unfortunate and malicious expulsion of the Mathira MP."
