Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) leader Raila Odinga has refuted claims that his molasses plant in Kisumu contributed to the financial woes at Mumias Sugar Company due to outstanding debt.
Speaking in Kakamega County over the weekend, the former prime minister said that his company does not owe the sugar miller any money and that the company has been acquiring molasses from Nzoia, Chemilili, Muhoroni and Sony Sugar companies.
Raila insisted that his company paid all dues owed and that whenever the company failed to settle the debts, he would pay using his own money.
He further revealed that Mumias Sugar Company supplied molasses to his company on a bank guarantee of Sh2 million.
Raila accused the national government of failing to fight cheap sugar imports while lying to Kenyans that the company’s management was poor.
In 2013, Raila had to defend ownership of the plant during a presidential debate saying that is was acquired through a public auction.
