Several ODM leaders from Rarieda and Bondo constituencies have thrown their weight behind Cornel Rasanga ahead of the Siaya County Governor by-election scheduled for next month.
County ODM chairman George Oloo Okanda yesterday said there would be no need for the party to hold nominations for the seat in Siaya.
“We have decided as grassroots leaders to support Rasanga, who has not been charged with any wrong-doing for the short time he was in office,” Mr Okanda said in Kisumu Sunday.
He said the time meant for campaigns ahead of the by-elections was very short and that the nominations would be expensive as the party only conducted primaries barely eight months ago.
“As the people of Siaya, we have decided to use the available limited time to rally our support behind Mr Rasanga; nominations will be expensive, time-consuming and will cause further divisions in the party,” Mr Okanda said.
He cited the fall-out between Oburu Odinga and William Oduol after the nominations for the March 4 elections.
Rarieda branch secretary Tobias Abondo added that since the court did not fault the incumbent, he stood a better chance of leading the county.
“Rasanga had laid down governance machinery that was already working on the ground; let us support him to allow continuity in the good work he had initiated,” Mr Abondo said.
His Bondo counterpart, Mr George Awere, also said new faces would result in a repeat of the sham nomination process witnessed in January this year.
