The Judicial Service Commission has sent Chief Registrar Gladys Shollei on compulsory leave as it tasks two of its committees to probe allegations against her.
The decision followed a three-hour closed door meeting between the Chief Justice and commissioners.
Speaking after the meeting on Monday evening, Chief Justice Willy Mutunga said the decision arose from complaints that necessitated appropriate action.
According to him, the commissioners agreed that Finance, Administration and Human Resources committees will inquire into allegations against Ms Shollei touching on but not limited to procurement.
"They will identify and explain specific issues which she is to respond to and must finalise their investigations within 15 days," he said.
He said 5 out of the nine commissioners voted that the Chief Registrar be sent on compulsory leave.
Ms Shollei termed the commission's decision as irregular and unfortunate saying: "I reserve my right to contest the process and procedure used.
"I call upon the teams to carry out a comprehensive assessment and audit," she said.
Other JSC members are vice-chairperson Christine Mango, Justice Smokin Wanjala, Justice Isaac Lenaola, Attorney General Githu Muigai, Ms Emily Ominde, Mrs Florence Mwangangi, Mr Abdullahi, Mr Titus Gateere and the Rev Samuel Kobia.
