Corridors of Power

Monday, August 19, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY POLITICAL DESK
A Nairobi MP recently found himself haggling on whether to shake hands with Deputy President William Ruto during a public function. The lawmaker was heard complaining to his colleague that he feared being photographed shaking hands with Ruto who is a political adversary of Cord leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. However, when the deputy president arrived at the venue, the MP found it hard to resist a handshake as hordes of photojournalists who were covering the event clicked their cameras. After the event, the MP was again at it, this time telling his friends that he will pray and hope that no journalist uses the photograph where he is shaking hands with Ruto. His only consolation was that he is little known and none of the local dailies will bother to use such a photo.

Top government officials and organisers of an even were recently embarrassed after they failed to recognise a US diplomat at a function where Deputy President William Ruto was the chief guest. David Renz, Counsellor for Economic Affairs at the US Embassy in Nairobi, was representing US ambassador Robert Godec during the laying of the foundation stone at the Kenya Paraplegic Organisation's Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Trauma Centre in Olooloitikosh, Kajiado constituency. Other guests were introduced and their presence acknowledged. It was only after the event that the organisers realised the US government had a representative. It was however too late as guests had already started leaving.

In the same event, several MPs who attended the event were later heard grumbling that they would have pledged “good money” if the organisers had acknowledged their presence. The MPs went ahead to state that the donation would have even been “fatter” if they had been given a chance to greet the audience as in public rallies.
