The electoral commission has cleared lawyer Kethi Kilonzo to run for Makueni senate seat on a Wiper Democratic Movement ticket.
Ms Kilonzo presented her nomination papers to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission at Wote Catholic Multi-Purpose Hall Thursday.
She was accompanied by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and former Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka.
Hundreds of wananchi thronged the offices to witness the exercise.
Mr Odinga and Mr Musyoka told Makueni people to come out in large numbers and vote for Kethi on July 22, saying she was best suited to replace her father, Mr Mutula Kilonzo, who died on April 27.
Others who escorted the aspirant included Machakos County Senator Johnston Muthama, Siaya Senator James Orengo, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana, MPs Daniel Maanzo (Makueni), Kisoi Munyao (Mbooni), Daniel Makenga (Kaiti) and several county representatives from Makueni, Kitui and Machakos counties.
Others expected to be cleared are Mr David Mailu and Mr P. Katumo, who will contest the seat as independent candidates.
The campaign for the by-election will start on July 1 and end on July 21.
