NAIROBI, Kenya, May 29 – The Salaries and Remuneration Commission insists that Parliament committed an illegality by reinstating their pay to Sh851,000 after overturning a Gazette Notice that pegged it at Sh532,000.
SRC chairperson Sarah Serem has now cautioned the Parliamentary Service Commission and clerks of the National Assembly and Senate against making any additional salary payments since it will be against the law.
“Anyone who acts outside the law will be held liable for abuse of office,” Serem warned.
She argues that the Constitution supersedes any Act of Parliament and the new pay for MPs did not require parliamentary approval as demanded by the lawmakers.
She has previously stated that any monies paid out illegally will be recovered.
