Kibaki set to retire in Sh500 million home

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY WAMBUGU KANYI
A palatial house along Nyeri – Mweiga highway next to Mweiga airstrip may be President Kibaki's home after retirement. The Sh500 million house was built a year ago and is heavily guarded General Service Unit officers.
It is fenced, has two gates and a tarmacked driveway. Kibaki and his children have been visiting the home. The permanent home was built on a 100-acre piece of land which is part of the 1,000-acre land belonging to Sasini Mweiga Estate.
A Source said Kibaki bought the farm because he has shares in the farm. “The home has a swimming pool, Jacuzzi and other modern facilities. It is ready for use,” the source said.
Aside from the main house, the 100-acre compound has a guest house, security offices, secretariat offices and a canteen for employees. The compound also has special grounds that can sit 500 people. Kibaki has homes in Nairobi’s Muthaiga and Othaya.
“This shows many people that Kibaki may not retire in Othaya after all despite having a home which is well manned by the state and which is only about 25 kilometers away. Maybe he wants to rest without disturbances from his people who he has represented for 38 years in Parliament,” said a leader in Othaya.
Kibaki will get Sh17 million gratuity from the government upon retirement. The amount is equal to his annual salary for the two terms he has served as President. He will also get Sh950,000 every month.
His monthly allowances will include a housing allowance of Sh300,000, Sh300,000 for electricity, water and telephone allowances, Sh200,00 for fuel and a further Sh200,000 for entertainment.
Kibaki will have two four-wheel drive cars with an engine capacity of 3,400cc and two others of his choice with an engine capacity of at least 3,000cc.
An insurance company will provide Kibaki and his wife with medical cover for local and overseas treatment at the government's expense.
