Wednesday February 27, 2013 - Head of African Union Observation Mission Joaquim Chissano, has told the US and the European Union to stop meddling in Kenya’s political affairs, and let Kenyans decide on March 4th.
Addressing the press in Nairobi on Tuesday, Chissano who is former Mozambique President said the EU and US should not dictate to Kenyans whom they should elect as president on Monday.
“Western nations are pushing for their own interests but they should know Kenya is an independent nation mature enough to make her own democratic decisions. Kenyans have liberty to choose the leaders of their choice,” he said.
The US and the EU, through their envoys had earlier threatened to slap sanctions on Kenya, if Jubilee Presidential flagbearer Uhuru Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto are elected on March 4th.
Uhuru and Ruto are facing charges of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and their trials are supposed to start in April, but may be postponed to August this year, due to lack of credible evidence.
