G7 Alliance restates pact to take on Raila

The G7 Alliance will work together to nominate one candidate to face ODM in the March 4, 2013, General Election.

It was necessary to form a formidable union to take on Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s party next year, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta said on Sunday.

“In 2007, President Kibaki vied for presidency under PNU which ended up winning only slightly more than 40 seats in Parliament. But this put him in a difficult position to challenge ODM that had won 110 seats,” he said.

The National Alliance presidential aspirant said President Kibaki had to seek support from other parties to push his agenda in Parliament.

“This time round we don’t want to be in the same position,” he said during a series of rallies in Kajiado North constituency.

Justice minister Eugene Wamalwa said New Ford-Kenya would not field a candidate for the Kajiado North by-election.

He said his party would support The National Alliance candidate.

Mr Wamalwa said they would work with TNA to capture the seat left vacant by former Internal Security minister George Saitoti, who died in a helicopter crash in June.

“We are in a good relationship with the leaders of TNA including the Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta. We have decided to support his party in this by-election,” he said.

Welcomed decision

Mr Kenyatta welcomed New Ford-K’s decision to support his party, saying it would boost TNA’s chances in the by-election set for September 17.

Meanwhile, Mr Wamalwa urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to adopt the biometric voting system to ensure free and fair elections.

He said the meeting between President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Monday would help sort out the problems the commission faced in its plan to acquire the system.
