Aspirant arrested for branding MP ‘thief’
A parliamentary aspirant has been arrested by Bondo police for allegedly inciting the public against Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo.Joseph Arung Okweso was yesterday arrested by detectives in Rarieda after he allegedly used abusive language against Gumbo. Okweso is said to have convened a public rally at Madungu trading centre on Sunday, where he allegedly told the gathering that the MP is a “thief who should not be re-elected to parliament”.
Bondo CID chief Stephen ole Tangi said Gumbo reported the matter to the CID and recorded a statement. Gumbo yesterday said, “Everybody aspiring for leadership must do so responsibly. The law cannot be suspended at the altar of petty and primitive politics.” Tangi said members of the public tipped the police on Okweso’s whereabouts.
He was arrested at his rural home. “Okweso has recorded a statement with the CID and we have began investigating the incident,” Tangi said. He said they will chargeOkweso with incitement when they gather enough evidence. Tangi said the arrest will serve as an example to other politicians who incite the public and “create unnecessary tension” ahead of the general election.
