KANU NEC bypasses Uhuru, calls delegates

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 30 - The National Executive Council (NEC) of KANU has resolved to take charge of the process of complying with the Political Parties Act.
According to KANU’s Secretary General Nick Salat the party’s top management organ met on Friday and resolved that a thrice-postponed National Delegates Conference will be held on April 13.
Salat who spoke at the party’s headquarters said that the meeting had resolved that the party’s NEC will meet at least once every three months.
“The NEC invoked Article 13(2) c of its Constitution which requires that it meets at least once every three months in the event of an emergency.  It shall assume full responsibility for the party and shall report to the National Governing Council and the National Delegates Conference,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the party will comply with requirements of the Political Parties Act before the April 30 deadline expires.
Party chairman Uhuru Kenyatta did not attend the meeting but his deputy Gideon Moi was present.
“We are sure that we will be able to comply and get a certificate, we have not as yet changed any position in the party,” he emphasised.
Insiders in the meeting however said that the resolution reached was a clear message to the party chairman that KANU was ready to conduct its business without him.
Kenyatta has in the recent past faced criticism from his party members for overly indulging with the G7 Alliance at the expense of strengthening his own party.
Salat refused to be drawn into talk of Kenyatta joining another party saying that the emergency NEC meeting was not called to discuss the party chairman.
On Thursday former President Daniel arap Moi slammed a decision to by party chairman Uhuru Kenyatta to postpone the NDC expressing fears that the party faces deregistration with the compliance deadline so close.

In a statement the former KANU chairman said that was unfeeling for the KANU leadership to keep on announcing dates for the National Delegate’s Conference and later postpone them without adequate notice and credible reason.
The statement said: “Delegates feel insulted when they travel from such distant places as Mandera, Moyale and Lokitaung at great expense in terms of money and time only to be told the conference had been postponed indefinitely.”
The crucial meeting to discuss and adopt strategies ahead of the forthcoming general elections was postponed on Wednesday just 48 hours shy of the Friday meeting.
Party Chairman Uhuru Kenyatta said that the NDC was cancelled to allow branches make their members recruitment returns so that it complies with the Political Parties Act.
Kenyatta also finds himself in quite a complicated decision following calls by his party Secretary General Nick Salat that Kenyatta immediately declares the party he will use to run for President in the forthcoming general elections.
Salat last week said that members were surprised that Kenyatta last week asked GEMA leaders for one month to think which party ticket he will run on.
