Eldoret North MP William Ruto's defense team will Thursday take to the stand at the International Criminal Court as the confirmation of charges for three of the six implicated in the 2007/2008 post election violence kicks off at the Hague-based court.
Ruto's lawyers will begin making their submissions as from 3.30pm Kenyan time. He faces charges of crimes against humanity along with former industrialization minister Henry Kosgey and radio presenter Joshua arap Sang.
The defense team for the three will each have an hour to make their observations on the jurisdiction, admissibility and procedural matters.
Prosecutor Louis Moreno-Ocampo will them give his response for half an hour starting from 8pm Kenyan time before the close of court business at 9pm, Kenyan time.
Kosgey's lawyers will take to the stand from September 6th as Sang's team prepares to present their oral submissions from September 9th to 10th.
Ocampo is expected to question the defense witnesses. Defence lawyers had presented a list of 48 witnesses but the court only allowed two witnesses each.
The hearings which run up to September 12th creates an opportunity for the Pre-Trial chamber judges to review Ocampo's evidence against the three and rule if they have a case to answer or not.
Confirmation hearings for Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Head of Civil Service Francis Muthaura and former Police Commissioner Hussein Ali will begin on September 21st.
The six are accused of various war crimes, including murder, forced deportations and rape during the 2008 post-election violence in which about 1,300 people were killed.

Kenyan leaders namely Clergy ,Electoral Commision ,MPs,the PM and the President should take collective responsibility for the PEV for not preventing the violence and preaching peace.Instead they all alligned themselves on tribal lines ! Fine, some of the so called Ocampo six are at the hague, but what about the kenyans who actually killed other kenyans and are still at large..our first priority should have been a local tribunal to try "wanjikus".Hope Ocampo has enough CREDIBLE evidence or else this case will taint his CV for good !
ReplyDeleteThe PEV was a wake-up call to kenyans,to elect integral leaders. We should not complain for this rotten parliament, because we are the ones who elected them.We forget too soon, then we re-elect the same people just because we are voting through our stomachs ! Lets judge our leaders based on performance, vision and policies NOT handouts being given during campaigns ! rate your local leaders and make a decision come 2012 ! change must begin with you and me ; we have the power-the voter's card..this is the time !
