Prime Minister Raila Odinga Tuesday sought to congratulate the Muslim community for coming out in a huge way to assist in donating food and other essentials to Kenyans affected by the drought situation. Raila through a statement congratulated Muslims in Kenya and around the world as they ended the month of Ramadhan and prepare to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr. "I congratulate all those who have gone through the 30 days and nights of devotion to the Creator," the Premier said. "The month of Ramadhan found our country in the middle of a devastating drought and food shortage. All the same, our Muslim faithful, undeterred by the unfortunate events, went on to carry out their obligations to the poor and the less fortunate and shared the little food they had as demanded by their faith," Raila noted. He thanked the Muslim that even in the middle of biting scarcity, they as well as other Islamic organizations went out of their way and donated food to fellow Kenyans, including those who do not share the Islamic faith. "I congratulate you most sincerely on this gesture. It is my hope and my prayer that this spirit of caring and generosity be a permanent one among our people, regardless of race, tribe or faith," said Raila. The Premier also noted that the end of Ramadhan had come with the blessing of the country celebrating one year of the coming of the new Constitution, even though it began with dark clouds of hunger and drought. "As you celebrate, I urge you to join other Kenyans, in committing to safeguard the gains that we have attained in the new constitution and keep watch over the document to ensure its faithful implementation in word, spirit and letter," he said. Raila also sought to remind Kenyans that the new Constitution is one of the greatest gains the country has made since independence and therefore all must join hands in guarding it. Meanwhile, Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka alsocongratulated the muslim community for a successful fasting during the holy month of Ramadhan.Mr. Musyoka said through the month long fasting period Muslims, demonstrated fidelity to the requirements of their faith and hoped that they were able to reflect on the issues that unite Kenyans. "Fasting is an opportunity to deny oneself some pleasure and instead focus on the needs of others and personal spiritual nourishment," he said. He wished the Muslims and the rest of Kenyans a happy Idd ul Fitri and called on all Kenyans to unite in their support in the implementation of the new constitution. He also cautioned drivers to be careful when driving on the roads to avoid loss of life during the festivities. |
