Rachuonyo residents protest over new varsity

BY SAMUEL OWIDA
Residents of Kanam in Rachuonyo North District today staged a protest match against the establishment of Maseno University branch in the area without involving the community.
The angry residents who were holding twigs and placards were repulsed by anti-riot police from Kendu Bay. Police lobbied teargas canisters scaring them away bringing temporary calm around Homa Hill Centre.
The demonstrators vowed to carry on with their protest until their concerns are considered before the constituent college kicks off its programmes.
They said the community based institution, Homa Hill Centre, which is currently managed by locals, has offered both direct and in direct employment opportunities to the community.
They said the more than 100 hectares piece of land belonging to the community can’t be occupied and utilized by any organization without due regard to local ownership and memorandum of understanding between the two parties.
They accused Prof. Charles Nyambuga and area councilor, Dick Ojala, of trying to force the decision down their throats further accusing them of overstepping their mandate since they both hail from Kanam ‘A’ location while the area is situated in Kanam ‘B’ location.
“In early 1980s when Norwegian government established a community development centre for agricultural training and production, we as a community had a memorandum that governed us until 1991 when Kenya government under Moi administration cut diplomatic ties with Norway and disbanded the organization.
So no one should lord it on us,” said a resident.
Anti riot police kept vigil around Homa Hill Centre and the surround beaches in Lake Victoria to avert any possible riot.
District Commissioner, Rachuonyo North, William Lenaremo, said an agreement has not been possible despite several meetings involving stakeholders because the parcel of land the community officers the university is not feasible.
“The main deadlock is that the community is offering a small piece of land which the university is not able to roll out its plans. This is what has caused the misunderstanding,” said Mr.Lenaremo.
