President Mwai Kibaki yesterday praised the Church for helping resolve conflicts and assisting the poor. He cited the conflict in Somalia and Sudan as examples in which clerics have helped thousands displaced by war.
Appreciating clerics do not have all the means for conflict resolution, Kibaki said they should be agents of justice, forgiveness and reconciliation.
Kibaki stressed that in addition to keeping the flock on the right path, the Church must maintain its front line role of promoting peace in the region and other parts of the world. He made the remarks during the official opening of the 17th Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) plenary assembly at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in Nairobi.
The President said the government respects the views of the church and that both were partners in the struggle to improve the lives of wananchi. He said: “As spiritual leaders in our society, you shoulder the responsibility of pointing the right way forward, correcting us when we go wrong and ensuring that we remain God fearing men and women.”
