NAIROBI, Kenya, May 30 - A delegation from the Office of The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) was expected in Kenya on Monday evening to meet the government and key stakeholders in discussions of Kenya’s cooperation with the court.

The delegation of three key officials from the court is scheduled to hold discussions with the Cabinet Committee on International Criminal Court matters on Tuesday.

They will also hold talks with members of the civil society in view of Kenya’s cooperation with the ICC in regard to the ongoing cases of the six suspects linked to the post election violence of 2008.

The delegation is headed by the Jurisdiction Complimentarity and Cooperation Division Director Phakiso Mochochoko and it includes the Cooperation Advisor Shamisho Mbizvo.

Top on the agenda by the team will be issues that ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo has identified as serious concerns frustrating his case against the Kenyan suspects.

The visit comes hot on the heels of a statement by Mr Ocampo who on Sunday questioned Kenya’s commitment to cooperate with the court. He wondered if the Kenyan government was more concerned in protecting the perpetrators than the witnesses.

President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga in November 2009 pledged to support the court during its quest to nail those behind the 2008 post election violence.

Soon after Mr Ocampo released names of the six suspects he urged the two principals to relieve those holding government positions of their duties to facilitate proper investigations and also ensure there is no cover up due to the positions held.

But Mr Kibaki and Mr Odinga ignored his plea as Finance Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Head of the Civil Service Ambassador Francis Muthaura and Postmaster General Mohammed Hussein Ali are still holding their top positions in government.
