President Mwai Kibaki says Kenya is prepared and committed to amend its national laws and policies that may hinder the implementation of the common market protocol which he says will spur economic growth and development in the wider East African Community regional bloc.
The 5th meeting of the third session of the East African Legislative Assembly meeting here in Kenya was the launching pad for the regional bloc to set in motion strategic development that will strengthen economic ties. President Kibaki pledged his support saying, "the country will amend some national laws and policies to ease the common market protocol."
House Speaker Kenneth Marende however called for the East African Legislative Assembly to pass legislation that will foster policies that will unify the the regional bloc. "The assembly is charged with a crucial role of legislating solutions that bedevils the East African community," Marende added.
Marende has advocated for a formulation of a socio-political federation to cede ground that will enhance economies of scale.
The assembly has convened in the country to deliberate on the EAC budget for it's next financial year. Infrastructure development is key in the growth of the East African Community. The trading bloc is also considering to establish a free trade area with Comesa and the South African Development Community.
The legislative assembly meets in the country upto the 4th of June as they have been urged to enhance capacity to protect its territory and boost trade.
