NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 8 – “I need that one so I can keep to my points and not be angered,” Martha Karua says of the iPad her assistant Waithera tried to move out of her way.
Clad in her trademark African print, Karua waited for her lawyer Gitobu Imanyara to make his way to her side so they could both address the cause of her ire: President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Not too much earlier, they’d again sat side by side to address Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria’s statements to the effect that she conspired to ‘fix’ the crimes against humanity case Deputy President William Ruto is facing before The Hague based International Criminal Court (ICC).
This time she demanded that the Head of State stop sending his “attack dogs” and face her directly. The day before, the Leader of the Majority in the National Assembly Aden Duale having dragged her name back into the controversy.
Duale refuted Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s assertion that Kuria was an employee of President Kenyatta at the time of the alleged “fixing” in which he’s admitted to have been involved.
Duale transferred the responsibility for Kuria, in the immediate aftermath of the 2008 post-election violence, back to Karua. “Moses Kuria never worked for Uhuru Kenyatta at the material time. He was an employee of Martha Karua who was by then an influential Justice Minister.”
“So today Martha Karua cannot disown her political orphan. Moses Kuria in 2008 to 2012 before he joined TNA and Jubilee belonged to Martha Karua, you breast fed him, took care of him, you gave him resources, you told him to fix witnesses.”
A statement to which Karua took great exception saying that she would not simply stand by and have her name besmirched by those who’d made their names by being a “political nuisance.”
She therefore challenged Duale and the Jubilee MPs who stood behind him to repeat the statement quoted above outside the protection of Parliament’s precincts, “if they truly believe in what they said.”
Better yet, she challenged, President Kenyatta to make clear himself the exact nature of his relationship with Kuria “at the material time,” as Duale said – without dragging her name into the affair.
“Let him answer the questions the Right Honourable Raila raised directly. Let him not send his errand boys to use my name to clean up their mess as one would use a dirty rug. Ukiona mbwa anabweka, tafuta mwenyewe (when you hear a dog bark, look to the owner).”
Given it appeared Duale had taken over from where Kuria left off after being restrained by the court from publicly linking Karua to Ruto’s ICC case, Imanyara said they would be seeking to enjoin the National Assembly Leader of Majority in the defamation suit they’ve filed against Kuria.
He also wondered out loud where the Deputy President would have been while he was being “fixed.”
Karua went on to call on the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko to apply the law in a non-partisan manner and take action against those, “heightening tension in the country,” under the guise of prayer rallies for the collapse of Ruto’s ICC case.
