Ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga
Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga escaped death by a whisker after the car he was travelling in was sprayed with bullets near AHITI Institute, around five kilometers from Nyahururu town along Nyahururu- Nairobi road.
Two vehicles involved the in bloody incident had ten people on board. Police have confirmed that four people were killed in the midday incident while unconfirmed reports indicated that the fifth one, a woman, died in Nyahururu district hospital where the injured were rushed to. The people killed were three men and two women. Two drivers of the vehicles of the vehicles and Maina’s bodyguard were among those killed.
Maina was rushed to Nyahururu district hospital with a bullet wound on the left shoulder and on his hand. Maina gave a conflicting account to the police on the circumstances surrounding the bloody shooting. According to Maina, he was in a Subaru car and was using a Saloon as a chase car. He was travelling from Nairobi to Pesi area in Laikipia County for a meeting. He said upon reaching the area, a small car which he alleged was carrying policemen shot at their vehicles and drove away.
“The small car had plain clothes policemen and had been trailing us and managed to block our vehicles at the bump. They then brandished guns and started shooting at us indiscriminately.” he said. He said the motive of the incident was not known and said further details of the incidents will be disclosed once he is treated. “Right now, let the doctors do their work,’ said Maina who looked distressed. He was accompanied by his brother Mr Njoroge. “We had been spotting the vehicle once in a while but we did not suspect anything since we were not doing anything bad.We wonder why they shot at innocent people,’ he said at the hospital.
Doctors at Nyahururu district hospital said Maina was in a stable condition but he had requested to be transferred to the Aga Khan Hospital.
Four other people had also been admitted to Nyahururu district hospital in critical condition while one woman was slightly injured. Police on the other hand said the two vehicles were not together and Maina was driving ahead when another vehicle overtook them and started spraying bullets at them. He described the incident as unfortunate. Nyandarua police County Commander Hamisi Mabeya who confirmed the incident said Maina’s group had guns also and they started shooting back. “This is an ugly incident which we did not expect and we have launched investigations into the incident,” he noted. At the scene, the vehicles lost control and veered off the road before landing in a ditch. Bodies of the four people lied on the vehicles with blood spilling all over. Each vehicle had over ten bullet holes. The bodies of the deceased he noted were moved to Nyahururu district hospital mortuary.
The outlawed Mungiki sect has been experiencing a power struggle which has resulted in factions fighting for control of the sects assets. The discovery of seven bodies in shallow graves in Kitengela have been linked to the differences among the sect members some accusing Maina’s supporters of taking over their properties in Nairobi and other parts of the country without their consent. Maina when questioned said that he would not comment on the matter.
