At least five police officers and three members of the public were shot dead at the Kenya-Somalia border town of Liboi Tuesday afternoon when the vehicle they were travelling in was attacked.
Two officers, an AP officer and his regular police counterpart, are also missing after the attack.
The officers were travelling from Liboi to Dadaab when they were ambushed by unknown gunmen, suspected to be bandits, shot them at Kulan area.
The deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of the AP Samuel Arachi has confirmed the incident but said that he is yet to be fully briefed.
“We have the information about the attack and have sent a team to the scene to brief us fully,” said Mr Arachi.
Sources on the ground have told Nation that among those killed are three Administration Police (AP) officers including an inspector and his two colleagues, a police driver, and three members of the public who had been given a lift in the police Landcruiser.
Their vehicle was attacked a few minutes after a vehicle belonging to the General Service Unit’s (GSU) Recce squad passed the area.
The area has been prone to attacks where police officers have either been shot dead or seriously injured following the attacks.
In May last year, four police officers were shot and seriously wounded when attackers believed to be Al Shabaab ambushed them within the same area. The officers had been on a night patrol and were attacked as they returned to their camp.
The attack took place just a few hours after a high powered delegation from the police headquarters visited Kapenguria to bring together he warring communities.
