The top organ of the Kenya National Union of Teachers on Friday moved to solve the standoff between its top two officials, who have been fighting over the secretary-general’s post.
Reports from Knut’s National Executive Council meeting in Nairobi indicated that they agreed to allow Mr Wilson Sossion to take the secretary-general’s seat as Mr Mudzo Nzili, who has been acting in the post, assumes the chairmanship.
In phone interview with the Saturday Nation, Mr Sossion said he and Nzili were comfortable with the decision of the council as it was the supreme body that determines the running of the union.
OUR FINAL VOICE
“NEC is our final voice and we respect their decision and we will follow it,” the outgoing chairman said.
Our efforts to reach Mr Nzili for a comment were futile as his phone remained switched off.
Mr Sossion said the meeting considered several matters before reaching the decision. Among issues considered, he said, was how they wanted the future leadership of the union to look like, and the views of the majority of teachers.
He said the decision was necessary as the union would now focus its energies on more important issues.
“We are now concentrating on the Knut’s annual national delegates’ conference that is coming up in December,” he said. (READ: Knut delegates fight over Sossion’s post)
However, Mr Sossion said any other member of the union was free to compete with them in the December polls to enhance democracy.
The secretary-general post is powerful in the union as the holder acts as the chief executive and spokesman.
