Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko yesterday dismissed as 'fake and photo-shopped' images purporting to be on him and Nairobi Women representative Rachel Shebesh in intimate poses.
The photos have gone viral on the internet since their release on Tuesday and have been the subject of numerous radio talk shows since.
Yesterday, Sonko said he was "shocked" to see the photos which "have caused me and my family distress."
He said the photos had been 'photo-shopped' and claimed they could be the work of " the National Intelligence Services or Al-shabab." He however could not explain what motive the NIS and the Somali militant group would have in doing so.
He denied suggestions that he was responsible for release the photographs or even taking them.
Sonko said although he and Shebesh had personal differences, "i cannot stoop so low as to take and post such photos on the internet," he said.
"I have a name, a family and a political future to protect. I want the police to tell me who is taking advantage of my differences with Shebesh to post such pictures," added Sonko
The photos allegedly show the two intimately holding each other at a beach front while others purport to show the two lying down somewhere with Shebesh's head resting on Sonko's chest. In these photos both are fully clothed.
"I'm not aware of any such pictures and whoever is circulating them knows better where he found them and why he has decided to circulate fake images of me and Shebesh," added Sonko.
Sonko and Shebesh have been close allies and friends before but have had a falling out since the elections. Their have featured jointly following reports two weeks ago that they had checked in together at the Crowne Plaza hotel and thereafter had an altercation which saw the management intervene.
Soon afterwards, Sonko is reported to have confronted Shebesh in Parliament accusing her of leaking government secrets to Raila through Raila's close ally Rosa Buyu.
It is after this that Shebesh quit from several parliamentary committees where she was a member.
Prior to her altercations with Sonko, Shebesh had filed a complaint with the police alleging that Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero had slapped her. Kidero also filed complaint alleging that he reacted after Shebesh 'manhandled' him in the groin. Both complaints are still being investigated.
Soon after this incident,Sonko had offered to act as mediator and reconcile the two saying he was doing so for the benefit of city residents.
