Kalenjin elders urged to unite Ruto and Rutto

Monday, September 2, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY SONU TANU
Kalenjin Elders were yesterday told to reconcile Deputy President William Ruto and Bomet Governor Isaac Rutto over their different stands on referendum calls.
A faction of Kipsigis leaders said Kalenjin community may fall apart if action is not taken to resolve their differences.
Former Moi Operation Wins national treasurer Johnston Cheruiyot Chamge said Kenya is not ready to go to the polls since it is only five months after March 4 general election.
He said the ongoing referendum debate is counterproductive to the Kalenjin community and other citizens. “Jubilee government in its own way gave Kenyans a 34 per cent of the devolved funds to the counties, which is more than the 15 per cent enshrined in the constitution,” Chamge said.
He said poll losers in the March 4 general election are still bitter at their loss and want to use the referendum to destabilise the government.
Speaking to the press in Kericho town, Chamge it is time for Kalenjin elders to bring peace between the two. He described the war of words between William and Isaac as "development retrogressive".
Chamge told Kalenjin community to steer off from referendum debate and team up with those developing their regions.
He termed as unrealistic for a section of leaders in the country to amend the constitution three years after it was promulgated and is yet to be implemented fully.
Chamge described those behind the referendum calls as "power hungry" and they want to ascend to power through the back door.
He said those calling for the referendum to wait for not less than ten years as Jubilee is currently working to fulfil electoral pledges it made during the election.

But a KANU official in Kericho Paul Tarimbo Chirchir said pressure from Isaac for referendum at this moment is timely. He said Kenyans calling for the referendum are on the right because Jubilee promised to fulfill its pledges within 100 days after ascending to power.
Chirchir said Isaac who is also the chair of Governors’ Council is right and William should not reprimand him. "Its now more than 100 days since Jubilee government came to power. We are yet to see any of the pledges fulfilled," Chirchir said.
