We Need Seriousness In The Coalitions
The unveiling of the president and vice-president line-ups of the two leading coalitions has set in motion a titanic political battle for the succession of President Kibaki. During the launch of their respective line-ups, the top leaders vowed to mount a vigorous campaign and exuded confidence that they will form the next government.
The Cord which brings together ODM, Wiper and Ford Kenya is confident it will win the poll in the first round. It cited its reform credentials and the fact it is being led by the incumbent Prime Minister and Vice- President. Jubilee, which is led by DPM Uhuru Kenyatta and former cabinet minister William Ruto exuded similar confidence.
The two argued that Kenyans are tired of leaders who have done little to transform the lives of people, yet they have been in leadership for many years saying it’s time for the young generation composed of intellectuals and innovators, to take over the leadership. But at least the two camps concurred on the important issue on promoting unity and reconciliation.
The March 4 poll is the first one to be held under the new Constitution. As the campaigns move to the home stretch, the Jubilee alliance’s decision to kick out the UDF leader Musalia Mudavadi has elicited mixed reactions. Though some praised it arguing that his continued stay would rock the boat from within, others felt that the decision was misguided and irrational.
Earlier, a group of 40 MPs had threatened to quit the coalition if Uhuru’s name will not be in presidential ballot. However, the Gatundu MP downplayed the threats arguing that just like him Mudavadi is a Kenyan and he was ready to support him if he wins the ticket. Later, it emerged that on the day Uhuru and Ruto announced that the Jubilee had severed links with UDF, Mudavadi planned to make a similar announcement at a public rally in Nyeri. The move by TNA and URP was therefore a wellcalculated move to preempt him.
