Police have arrested three university students
suspected to be behind a kidnap syndicate in Nairobi.
Among those arrested are two students at the
United States International University and the third, a female student at
Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology.
Detectives pursuing the case say they are
looking for more students named in the saga and claim they could be using their
hostels to hold their hostages as they wait for ransom to be paid.
The three students were arrested following the
kidnapping of a female student at the weekend from Roysambu area.
The student who is yet to be found is believed
to be held captive in Kiambu area.
The kidnappers had called her parents and
demanded a ransom of Sh100,000.
Head of Flying Squad Munga Nyale said the three
are believed to be behind the syndicate and targeting their colleagues at the
university.
“One of them was behind an earlier kidnapping
where we rescued another student in Kiambu and we believe they are working with
other students from other universities,” he said.
Nyale said they hope to rescue the kidnapped
student and that a team of detectives is on the ground pursuing various leads.
In the earlier kidnapping incident, a female
student was rescued from a house she had been held captive for days last month.
The kidnappers escaped before the raid.
The family of the missing student said she was
walking to college on Saturday when gunmen kidnapped her.
They then used her mobile phone to call the
parents to demand the ransom.
