Presidential aspirant Mutava Musyimi has asked government to enhance security especially in places of worship following Sunday's Garissa attacks that targeted two churches.

The Gachoka MP, while condemning the twin attacks on Garissa AIC and Catholic churches, said security was paramount and would be fully addressed if the vacant Internal Security docket was filled immediately.

He said the attacks were not a religious warfare but warned that they could have been perpetrated by Kenyans.

The Garissa attacks killed 17 people including two police officers and left over 60 injured when hooded gunmen shot indiscriminately and hurled grenades at the worshippers in the two churches.

“The attacks were terrible and we need to be more vigilant amongst ourselves even as we blame the Al Shabaab terror group,” said Rev Musyimi.

He urged President Kibaki to immediately fill the Internal Security docket left vacant following the death of minster George Saitoti in a plane crash.

“Security is a very paramount issue and cannot be taken lightly, the position must be filed immediately to help address security issues from a focal point,” added the Democratic Party (DP) presidential aspirant.

He hailed both Christian and Muslim leaders for moving swiftly to allay fears of animosity between the two faiths following the attacks.

While addressing the press in Murang’a where he was meeting DP delegates from the area, Rev Musyimi restated that he was still in the presidential race saying he was sure of victory.

Woman running mate

He said he was ready to compete with any other aspirant DP for the top post during nominations.

He revealed that he would choose a woman as his running mate from North Rift, Western or Nyanza regions.

“Women bring in a unique kind of leadership and I will select one as my running mate,” he said.

While praising President Kibaki’s development record, Rev Musyimi said he would continue with the same if elected to lead the country.

“Economic power is very crucial for any country and President Kibaki has done a remarkable job, he has taught us how important it is for a country to be economically powerful and I will ensure that trend continues,” he said.

He said governance was also paramount for development of a nation and must be well driven adding that he would ensure the youth were taken care of by enabling them access credit for business development.
