Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Sunday reached out to Coast people pledging to tackle numerous problems plaguing their region, which have not been addressed by successive governments since independence.
Issues pertaining to landlessness, unemployment, exploiting resources, poor infrastructure and the nagging matter of the outlawed Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) are the most pressing concerns for the Coast residents.
While addressing a massive rally at Mombasa’s Likoni area, Mr Odinga trumpeted his reformist credentials and the ideologies his Orange Democratic Party (ODM) stands for, as the best bet for Coast people in their quest to have these issues addressed and development realised in the region.
The ODM meeting at Likoni was one of the two parallel rallies held in Mombasa, besides the one convened by his rival and former ally Musalia Mudavai, which was held at Tononoka Grounds in Mvita.
Mr Odinga said the history of independent Kenya has been a catalogued by a perennial struggle between liberators and traitors and urged Coast people and Kenyans to support ODM and move the country forward.
He described himself as belonging to the group of liberators that have relentlessly fought for reforms in the country.
This is the reason as to why he has been a target of numerous attacks from those who have betrayed the cause of Kenya’s nationhood, he added.
“But I have come to Mombasa to deliver a message of hope. In ODM we carry the liberation flag. I want us to carry that to the top of the mountain,” Mr Odinga told the crowd.
He said that the concerns being raised by the proscribed MRC touching on historical injustices were the same he had fought for in his reformist struggle in the country.
“MRC is talking the language of liberation. This is the language of Raila,” he said.
