The top KCSE candidate defied all odds coming from a village known for abject poverty and lack of interest in education to clinch the overall top position. When the star visited the Mayanja village of Bumula constituency one of the poorest region according to statistics by the ministry of planning the villagers were seen wondering aloud what the cameras were doing in the dead village.
The announcement of the results sparked celebrations in the village as friends and relatives of Job Nalianya the top student country wide burst into celebrations blocking the Mayanja –Bungoma road in song and dance for the better part of the day. They marched to Bungoma town twenty five kilometers away.
The top student was going on with his daily chores of grazing his parents herd of cattle only to be informed of the results by a relative who was watching television in Nairobi. Nalianya who wants to be neuron surgeon and catholic preist said though he expected to pass his exams he did not expect to be the top overall student country wide . “I can’t believe it, God is great, and my dreams have at last come true. I dedicate this to my parents who have struggled with me all through ,”he said.
A fourth born, in family of seven, Nalianya said he attributed the good results to the hard work, discipline and devotion to religious matters at his former school. “Our teachers always encouraged us to be all round students and always pray ,”he said. The village Nalianya hails from has never recorded a straight A since the 8-4-4 inception nding completing form four without caring what results they get.
According area district education officer for Bungoma south Japeth Shitubi Nalianya’s performance was an encouragement to many in the area . “This is a village where people only believe completing the fourth form and going straight to marriage ,”he said. His parents Hellen Nalianya and Edward Nalianya both primary school teachers at the Miluki primary described the young man as a diligent and hard working man. “The boy has been a hardworking boy all through, so we expected good results from him ,”said his father….ENDS
