PARENTS are on the warpath across the country. Multiple cases of parents blasting schools are in the regional news pages. The harassment of teachers has reached such levels that some have committed suicide or run away.
It is wrong for parents to take the law into their own hands. Yes, it is tragic if your child has not done well in his or her KCPE exams. The school and the teachers may be partly responsible. But the child and the parent also have a big part to play in academic success. There is a strong correlation between stable responsible family life and academic achievement.
If the father is neglectful or polygamous, and the mother is struggling to cope, the child may have trouble at school. In urban areas, children are often allowed to watch TV and neglect their homework. How many of these parents who are complaining about the teachers have done all they should to support their children? Why is it that the children of born-again Christian families often do better at school? Irresponsible parents prefer to indulge their children rather than fighting with them to do their homework. But in that case, don't blame the teacher, blame yourself.
